STIRLING

Known as the gateway to the highlands, the city of Stirling occupies the point where the flatter lowlands of Scotland give way to the more mountainous northern regions, with several ranges of hills visible from the city. Stirling was at one point the seat of royal government in Scotland; its large medieval castle and old town rise sharply above the surrounding plains on a rocky volcanic plug. Many famous local attractions offer opportunities to enjoy both spectacular natural landmarks and historic monuments. The University campus lies outside the city centre in beautifully landscaped parkland.
